Bathroom Safety for Seniors: 5 Essential Tips to Remember

bathroom-safety-for-seniors

Bathrooms are one of the most dangerous areas in your home – they are wet and slippery which can lead to accidental slips and falls. It is particularly dangerous for seniors who suffer from weakness, balance issues, frailty, and cognitive issues like dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. At Home With Help, we want you to remain safe at home, which is why we have compiled this list of tips for bathroom safety, especially for seniors.

Stay Safe with These Tips

Here are some safety tips that you should keep in mind to avoid accidental slips, falls, and injuries.

  • Look for someone who can accompany you for safety supervision. If you or your senior loved one has mobility or balance issues, try to look for someone who can assist you as you go to the bathroom. Our caregivers can help you get in and out of the bathtub, and they can assist you so that you don’t fall and slip.
  • Install transfer benches, grab bars, and other safety fixtures. Consider replacing a bathtub that’s a little too high for you to step over or replace it with a walk-in shower instead. If you don’t want to replace your bathtub, install a transfer seat that can help senior adults to get in and out of the bathtub safely. Also, consider adding grab bars next to the toilet and within your bathroom.
  • Make sure there’s adequate lighting. You might find yourself needing a bathroom break in the middle of the night, so make sure that there’s adequate lighting so that you won’t have to walk around in the dark.
  • Keep the floor dry. One of the most important things that you can do to maintain bathroom safety for seniors is to ensure that the floors are dry. Before they even get inside, make sure that the floor isn’t damp or wet. After usage, make sure to wipe it dry again. It may seem like a simple task, but keeping the floor dry is one of the easiest things that you can do to avoid slips and falls.
  • Check the water temperature. An older adult’s capacity to feel the water temperature may become compromised due to certain neurological damage or medical conditions. Make sure to check the water temperature and check that it’s not too hot or too cold.

As a reputable provider of personal care services in the Greater Scottsdale, Phoenix AZ, we encourage you to consider these tips. We want you and your senior loved ones to remain safe, healthy, and we want you to live a higher quality of life free from accidental injuries.
