Preventing GERD By Getting Enough Sleep

Preventing GERD By Getting Enough Sleep

Sleep for your good health. This is a widely accepted truth that we always encourage and apply, even as we provide Personal Care Services in Scottsdale, Arizona. We help ensure that our senior clients can get their much-need sleep every night, so they can enjoy a better disposition for the day.

However, sleeping well at night is more than just able to help us feel better the next day. A good amount of sleep is able to protect us from age-related illnesses, and GERD is one of them. According to WebMD, GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease is one of the common digestive ailments that occur in older adults. This condition is better known as “acid reflux.”

  • What is GERD?
This is a condition that is not exclusive for seniors but can occur to them. It can result in painful sensations in the stomach and heartburn. What happens with GERD is that the acid in the stomach, which primarily works to digest the food eaten, go up to the esophagus. There are many causes of GERD, and not sleeping well is one of them.
  • Why lack of sleep triggers GERD?

The body reaches a full relax mode when they sleep and reaches the stage of the so-called rapid eye movement (RME). At this stage, the body organs continue to work, replacing the used up cells from the day’s activities. However, when a person doesn’t sleep at night, the brain signals for the full-function mode, requiring the person to eat in the middle of the night. As a result, they may feel hunger pangs at midnight. When they don’t eat at this time, and they’re fully awake, acid reflux happens.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, lack of sleep and GERD forms a cycle that complicates each other in the long run when nothing is done to them. In other words, GERD causes more sleeping problems, and as a result, lack of more sleep complicates the GERD further.

  • What can you do?

When the GERD is chronic, there are medications administered to address the painful sensations. A Caregiver in Arizona can assist your senior loved one in monito0ring the medications they take so that they have adhered to the prescription. Aside from medications, getting good sleep is also a practical step. Here are helpful suggestions we can provide:

    • Create a sleep routine that your senior loved one can follow.
    • Ensure that the senior is refreshed before sleeping so they can feel more relaxed for the night.
    • Play up calming songs in their room.
    • Avoid drinking water immediately before bedtime.
    • Replace bedsheets regularly so there’s no disturbance from itchiness.

In our In-Home Care Agency in Arizona, we partner with you in ensuring that the welfare and health of your senior loved ones at home are always kept in check. If you need our assistance at home, set an appointment with us at Home With Help.
