The Healthy Senior: Basic Practices We Often Forget to Follow When We’re Older

The Healthy Senior: Basic Practices We Often Forget to Follow When We’re Older

The marks of a healthy senior are displayed in their physical hygiene. In other words, if they’re showing poor hygiene, it’s safe to interpret that your aging loved one might be going through a hard time.

As your premier provider of Personal Care Services in Scottsdale, Arizona, we believe that your aging loved one deserves quality care and attention. When it comes to their hygiene needs, an older adult deserves sufficient assistance when they’re physically limited to do so.

The basic hygiene practices of a healthy senior person involve, but are not limited, to the following:

  • Taking a bath regularly
By “regularly”, this means that as often as necessary, since seniors are not really required to take a bath daily. When they do, their thinning skin can easily get irritated with exposure to soap and water. Meanwhile, they do need to be washed thoroughly in the secret parts of their body such as the folded skin on the breasts, armpits, or at the back of the knee. Washing your loved one’s hair can also add to their hygienic care.
  • Brushing at least two times daily
Twice a day is the ideal for people to brush their teeth and still have standard oral care discipline. Ensure that your senior loved one is using their dentist-prescribed toothpaste if they have sensitive gums. When they have dentures, brush it as well, to clear off bacteria from food residue. It’s also ideal to floss your teeth every after brushing to ensure that the in-betweens are also well-cleaned.
  • Washing your hands to prevent infection
The practice of hand-washing can prevent the spread of infection as you get to cleanse them off before holding anyone or anything. Wash your hands with soap and water as often as necessary. Use alcohol-free sanitizer when water is not available for washing.
  • Clean your fingernails
These are the parts where small dirt can get in and easily pass out infection. They are easily unnoticeable so to better promote good hygiene, trim the nails regularly.
  • Sleeping well every night
The good amount of sleep each night can contribute to full alertness and better focus the following day. Your senior loved one is able to attend to their personal care activities when they have gained good rest the night before. At least 8 hours of straight sleep is already good enough.

Do you know that a poorly maintained hygiene can signal other health issues?

That’s right. When you notice your aging loved one not being well-dressed, losing weight drastically, or having an unpleasant smell, it could be that they’re not well enough to attend to themselves. They could also be depressed for whatever reason. In this case, they might need thorough attention from Caregivers in Arizona who will assist them in their hygiene and other care needs.
